Sustainable Landscaping Takes Root Across Adams 12

Creating inviting, welcoming school grounds is a key element of the 2024 Bond, and sustainable landscaping is a core part of that vision. As bond projects move forward across the district, a new framework is guiding how outdoor spaces are designed – balancing functionality, building educational opportunities and teaching long-term stewardship of resources.

Often referred to as the “Coloradoscape,” this landscaping approach emphasizes drought-tolerant plants, native grasses, natural stone elements and efficient irrigation systems. Compared to traditional lawns, native grasses can require significantly less water – roughly 17 inches per year compared with more than 50 inches for Kentucky bluegrass – making them a practical choice in Colorado’s dry climate.

The shift supports both operational efficiency and environmental responsibility. Water is the district’s second-largest utility expense, and reducing irrigation needs can lower costs, ease maintenance demands and free up funding for classroom priorities. Native plantings are also resilient, support local biodiversity and create opportunities for outdoor learning.

This work is already visible at several campuses, and new projects are ahead. At Rocky Top Middle School, sustainable landscaping improvements planned for this summer will introduce updated site features designed to reduce water use while creating an attractive and welcoming entrance for students, families and visitors. Over time, the project is expected to reduce annual water consumption by as much as 30%, depending on weather and utility trends.

Rocky Top Middle School’s landscaping design builds off previous sustainable landscaping rolled out as part of the 2016 Bond, including at STEM Lab, FutureForward at Washington Square and Thunder Vista P-8.

As the 2024 Bond continues to take shape, these landscape investments will help transform school grounds across the district – creating outdoor spaces that reflect community pride, support sustainability and ensure campuses remain inviting for years to come.
