Welcome Grizzlies!

Waving Grizzly Bear

August 1, 2019

Dear Rocky Top Grizzlies,

We are eager to welcome new Grizzlies and returning students to the 2019-20 school year! You are now part of an incredible community focused on working together to create a successful environment for every Grizzly, every day.

It’s a great time to be a Grizzly as Rocky Top students and staff just earned the designation of a School to Watch for being a high performing middle school. That means we join a group of fewer than 500 schools nationwide who have earned that designation and now act as models for other middle schools seeking to advance excellence at the middle school level.

Though the most current information can always be found on the Rocky Top website, you'll find some very important documents linked to this email.

  • First, check out the calendar for this school year to find out when all the cool stuff is happening---especially the dances, talent show and musical concerts!

  • Next you'll find our bell schedule...remember that you're finished at 2:15 PM on Wednesdays. (See the FAGQ’s for an explanation of the three different schedules.)

  • The Frequently Asked Grizzly Questions (Preguntas Comunes) document is packed with answers to the most common things students wonder about prior to the start of school---if your question isn't answered there, feel free to call our main office at 720.972.2200.

  • Finally, the attached supply list/lista de utiles indicates what you'll need to start the year off on the right foot. Sixth graders, please do not bring your Chromebooks until Monday, August 19th; 7th and 8th graders, please do not bring your Chromebooks until Thursday, August 15th.

Tomorrow morning, Friday, August 2nd, your class schedule will be available to view and print through the Infinite Campus Portal IF you completed your online registration. [If you login and your schedule does not appear, visit the Adams 12 Registration website to complete the online registration process.]

  • On that document you'll find your assigned classes, teachers' names and classroom locations.

  • Once you know your teachers’ names, you can find your assigned core team by visiting the staff directory on the RTMS website or check out our Core Lists.

  • At the very top of your schedule you'll also see your assigned locker as well as the combination...if you haven't yet practiced using a combination lock, go get one! If you know how to do the right-left-right routine you'll be so much less stressed the first few days of school.

  • There may be circumstances that require us to make a last minute change to your schedule due to ever-shifting numbers, however, we will contact you directly should that situation arise.

  • If there is an issue with your electives, feel free to complete a class change form. Be aware that there is no guarantee we will be able to accommodate your request.

We'll see all students for the first day on Wednesday, August 14th: 6th graders from 8:30 AM to 11:15 AM and 7th and 8th graders from 11:30 to 2:15 PM. Busses will be running for both sessions, but no lunch will be served.

  • In order to get you oriented to the building, we will welcome 6th graders to our Exploring Grizzly Country open house on Tuesday, August 13th between 8:00 and 10:00 AM or between 1:00 and 3:00 PM. During either of those blocks of time you and your family may take a self guided tour, practice your locker combination, drop off any school supplies and enjoy breakfast during the morning session (donuts!) or dessert (ice cream!) during the afternoon session.

  • A more traditional Back to School Night for 6th grade, Welcome to Grizzly Country, will take place September 4th. Families will attend for some portion of the evening from 5:30 to 8:00 PM and more specific details will be shared soon.

  • We will welcome all New-to-RTMS  7th graders on Tuesday, August 13th from 3:00 to 4:00 PM and all New-to-RTMS 8th graders the same day from 5:15 to 6:15 PM. This will allow you and your families to meet with our counseling team and administrators prior to meeting your teachers through the open house schedule.

  • Returning 7th and 8th graders, though you already know your way around, come to meet your teachers during Back to School Night on Tuesday, August 13th.
Please note the staggered times by grade level: 4:00 to 5:45 PM for 7th graders and 6:15 to 8:00 PM for 8th graders.

We love getting families involved here at The Top. If you’d like to become a member of the Rocky Top PTO, please email the coordinators to find out about volunteer opportunities, special events and regular meetings. One of the PTO’s first challenges is to collect non-perishable snack items to be used throughout the year for teachers during conferences and for students during Wednesday afternoon study hall sessions. Feel free to drop off donations in the box located in the front office when attending any of our beginning of the year events.

Now... go for a hike, see a few movies and make that last trip to Water World then we’ll see you soon!
