Chair Placement/Challenges

Chair Placement

Students in the 7th and 8th grade bands will have the opportunity to audition for chair placement in their respective sections.  Auditions will be held during class.  If a student does not wish to play in front of other students, they may schedule a time after school to come in and audition.  Should a student choose not to audition, they forfeit the opportunity to have input into their placement.  With regards to chair placement, some important points to keep in mind are:

• Ease of tone production in a particular register of the instrument (some students will find more success and contribute more to the group on a lower part)
• The need for balanced instrumentation throughout the parts (strong players are needed on all parts)
• The need for good peer leadership on all parts

 

Challenges

Students will have the opportunity to challenge up to a higher chair placement once each month of the school year.  No challenges will be allowed within two weeks of any performance.  It is the responsibility of the student wishing to challenge to notify both the director and the person being challenged of their intent to challenge.  Students may play either during class or before or after school for their challenge.  The student being challenged has one week from the time the challenger plays to complete his or her part or forfeit the chair.  Challenges will include:

• Scales
• Sight-reading
• Prepared music from the students folder
