FACS – 6th grade
This course provides students the opportunity to learn essential life skills. It allows them to develop skills in food and nutrition, basic kitchen safety, clothing care, teamwork and leadership skills, etiquette and table setting, basic cooking terms, basic measuring abbreviations and equivalents, interpreting and using recipes, techniques and equipment for preparing and serving foods, personal responsibility, and job-related tasks.
ESSENTIAL LEARNINGS
Course Length: 6 Weeks |
Food Safety and Sanitation (½ week)
- Relate food preparation, food storage, and dishwashing techniques to food safety.
Nutrition (½ week)
- Describe the food groups in the Food Pyramid, and list recommended servings for their age group.
Etiquette (1 week)
- Describe, and demonstrate, proper table etiquette and table setting.
Preparing and Serving Food (3 weeks)
- Identify and model basic kitchen safety procedures.
- Recognize basic cooking utensils and cookware and describe their uses.
- Identify basic measuring abbreviations.
- Differentiate and demonstrate correct measuring procedures for dry, liquid, and solid ingredients.
- Describe and demonstrate basic mixing and cooking techniques.
Clothing Care (1 week)
- Practice clothing care and maintenance skills using appropriate products and techniques as stated on the clothing care labels.
